From the President's Desk

  • As the end of this GPSO administration comes to an end, I would like to thank all of the students, faculty, and staff who made the successes of this year possible.  GPSO has effectively re-established its place as a leading organization on this campus:  the administration listens and responds to our initiatives, departments and schools are recognizing the services we can offer them, and graduate students are receiving more support for their academic and research endeavors.  I am very excited to work with you and the 2014-2015 Executive Committee and Representatives to ensure that this trajectory of growth continues next year and beyond.
  • The Dean of Students Advisory Board met to discuss the 5-year review of the Dean of Students, Pete Goldsmith, and his department.  GPSO Vice President Dave Breed serves on this committee.  Questions can be directed to gpsovp@indiana.edu
  • The Bloomington Faculty Council (BFC) met Tuesday to discuss open access, the common calendar, and online course questionnaires.

For more information on any of these points, please contact Brady Harman, GPSO President.

Congratulations: GPSO Outstanding Graduate Student Awards

The Graduate and Professional Student Organization (GPSO) and The University Graduate School (UGS) have teamed up to formally recognize three outstanding graduate students, one each in the fields of research, community involvement, and teaching. Students are nominated by faculty, staff, and fellow students from across the university, and a competitive review process decides who will be honored. We strive to recognize students who have contributed to the graduate community in a unique way and are exemplary within their respective academic field.

2014-2015 GPSO Outstanding Graduate Students

in research: Jordan Barlow, Information Systems PhD

Jordan is the managing editor of MIS Quarterly Executive and and administrator of the Sona research study website. He is the lead author of seven of the nine projects published, presented, or under review over the course of his doctorate, and his research streams reflect both theoretical and practical impact. Two such examples are his work in collective intelligence in virtual streams and computer security. As a result, Jordan has been invited to present at the highly selective and multidisciplinary Collective Intelligence conference.

in community involvement: Ciara Miller, English MA/MFA

As former BGSA President, Ciara founded the Diversity Initiative at Indiana University. One of her most influential contributions to the unification of university and Bloomington communities is the organization and hosting of poetry slams, which are consistently the best attended poetry events in Bloomington. Through these, she also helped fundraise for the IU Poetry Slam Team to complete at the 2014 national college slam. This summer, Ciara will participate in a service and engagement project via Growth International Volunteer Excursions in Tanzania.

in teaching: Gopinaath Kannabiran, Informatics PhD

Gopi has received both the student-nominated WIC Inspirational Teacher Award and the Graduate Student Award via the IU Commission on Multicultural Understanding for his promotion of diversity through teaching efforts. He has contributed significantly to instructional content and design for multiple courses and workshops in the School of Informatics and Computing, and his student evaluations consistently commend his ability to foster high level thinking and consideration of multiple perspectives in problem solving.

Congratulations to these outstanding students!

If you would like to nominate a fellow student for next year's award, please see the criteria and process on our Outstanding Graduate Student webpage.

Survey: Graduate Student Diversity

GPSO is soliciting feedback and information about experiences related to diversity among graduate and professional students at IU. These survey results will be used to help GPSO determine its priorities for legislative advocacy, programming, and interactions with the University administration. Your feedback will help us to determine how we can best support all of our graduate and professional students on campus. All survey answers will remain confidential and anonymous. Comments may be used individually, but will always remain anonymous.

The survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. We greatly appreciate your participation in this survey and your contribution to creating a stronger graduate and professional student body.

To access the survey, click here.

To thank you for your engagement, you may enter to receive one of three $50 rewards at the end of the survey.
