  • Our Sustainability Officer, Jeff Meek, and I met with VP Morrison and IU Foundation CIO Stratten to discuss the GPSO Carbon Neutrality and Fossil Fuel Divestment Resolution.
  • I submitted a report to the Provost detailing the feedback of graduate students on the draft Strategic Plan.  You can find my report on our website.
  • GPSO is still seeking a Benefits Officer for next year.  Application details are below.

Call for Applications: GPSO Benefits Officer

GPSO is accepting applications for the position of Benefits Officer for the 2014-2015 academic year.

The Benefits Officer addresses the benefit needs of Student Academic Appointees (SAA’s) and student employees, specifically health insurance, stipends, fee remission structure and related employment issues. The position seeks to recommend improvements to benefit and compensation policies for all graduate and professional students.

Call for Applications: Emissaries for Graduate Student Diversity Program

Basic Information

Duration:  Fall 2014; Spring 2015; and, Summer 2015 (optional)
Position Open to:  all full-time IUB masters and PhD students
Hours per month:    less than three hours
Sponsor Department:  University Graduate School
Number of positions:  Twenty

Purpose

The Emissaries for Graduate Student Diversity are a small group of dedicated, energetic and positive graduate students with diverse backgrounds, degree plans, interests and extracurricular activities. They demonstrate student leadership and excellence as liaisons between diverse graduate students and Indiana University Bloomington.
The Emissaries for Graduate Student Diversity program will expand in 2014-15 into two separate emissary groups focusing on (1) recruitment and outreach; and, (2) retention and  community building.  The goal of the emissary program is to add a peer-component to the University Graduate School’s efforts for creating a positive climate for graduate students, particularly minority and underrepresented graduate students at IU Bloomington. 

Recruitment and Outreach Emissaries serve as initial peer contacts for pre-application students. Retention and Community Building Emissaries serve as resources for underrepresented and minority students who are just beginning their graduate program at IU Bloomington.

Deadline: April 3, 2014

Volunteer Opportunity: RentRocket Outreach

The City of Bloomington Department of Economic & Sustainable Development is looking for volunteers to help kick-start crowd-sourcing for our RentRocket project. RentRocket is an effort to help renters consider the full cost of living - including energy and transportation costs - when making housing decisions.

Nominations Open: GPSO Faculty Mentor Award

GPSO encourages all graduate and professional students to give their support to faculty members that they feel deserve special recognition for exemplary behavior by nominating them for the GPSO Faculty Mentor Award.

Guidelines

  • Faculty must be current or have retired within the current academic year.
  • Student must be current or have graduated within the last year
  • The award encompasses tenured and non-tenured faculty, including lecturers and adjuncts. Faculty status is not factored into the committee’s decision.
  • This is an award from the Graduate Student body of the IU Bloomington campus: candidates nominated must be faculty of the IU Bloomington campus.
  • The winners will be determined by the Awards Committee.
  • All nominated faculty will be issued a certificate of nomination from the GPSO.
  • Any student is free to nominate as many people as they would like. The quantity of letters received for a particular faculty member does not increase or decrease their chances of being selected.
  • Letters will be read only for the purpose of the GPSO Faculty Mentor Award and will not be disseminated for general access.
  • Letters should be no longer than 300 words.
