From the President's Desk

The Board of Trustees met in Indianapolis last Thursday and Friday. Among other agenda items, parking, strategic plan implementation, the student welfare initiative, and athletics were discussed. The AUSA President and I gave an update to the trustees on campus student initiatives, including fossil fuel divestment and renewable energy accountability. GA Opening: GPSO Community Development Coordinator (DUE TOMORROW)

Are you an expierenced event planner? Do you want to work on GPSO's community building initatives? Are you a frequent attendee of GPSO's Social Hours, Bagel Hours, and other exciting programs?

WE WANT YOU to apply for GPSO's Community Development Coordinator for 2015-2016!

GPSO's Community Development Coordinator's (CDC) main function is to plan and implement community-building programs for the graduate and professional student community. The CDC works closely with the President and Communications Coordinator to collaborate with other graduate student groups and disseminate information about programs. Innovative programming ideas are welcome and encouraged.

The Coordinator is a 20-hour per week (50% FTE) position. Compensation includes full tuition remission for 12 credits per semester and 6 credit hours during summer session 2016, excluding non-remittable fees; subsidized Student Academic Appointee Mandatory Health Insurance and a $12,500 stipend.

GPSO Elections

GPSO will be holding an election during our March 6th Assembly Meeting. The following positions are open for nomination by your GPSO representative:

  • President – SAA Position - 20 hr/week, fee remission, stipend
  • Vice President
  • Treasurer
  • Parliamentarian

For detailed position descriptions, please refer to the 2014-2015 Executive Committee page on our website.

Nominations will be open until March 6th. Any graduate or professional student can be nominated, they do not have to be currently involved with the GPSO. Self-nominations are accepted, but they may only be submitted by assembly representatives.

To nominate one of your peers, email gpso@indiana.edu today and submit a campaign blurb (1 page maximum) by Tuesday, March 3rd at 5:00pm. At the March Assembly meeting, all candidates will have the opportunity for a short speech and Q/A session.

Awards Officer

The Awards Officer oversees the awarding GPSO Travel and Research Grants. This involves working with GPSO accounts manager, Dr. Yolanda Treviño, the GPSO Excomm, and the Awards Committee. Apply here!

Benefits Officer

The Benefits Officer addresses the benefit needs of Student Academic Appointees (SAA’s) and student employees, specifically health insurance, stipends, fee remission structure and related employment issues. The position seeks to recommend improvements to benefit and compensation policies for all graduate and professional students. Apply here!

Diversity Officer

The Diversity Officer acts as a medium of communication between IUSA, BGSA, LGSA, ISA, other graduate student organizations and GPSO. The Diversity Officer also serves as a member of the External Relations committee. Apply here!

Sustainability Officer

The Sustainability Officer addresses issues related to sustainability within the GPSO and campus communities. Examples of issues addressed are recycling, transportation, carbon emissions and sustainable growth. Apply here!

GA Position: IU Visitor Information Center

The IU Visitor Information Center seeks a graduate assistant for the 2015-2016 academic year.  The position requires a 20-hour per week employment commitment.  The graduate assistant receives a stipend and a fee remission for up to 12 credit hours for each of the fall and spring semesters.  Applicants can be first-year or continuing graduate students.

The graduate assistant will support the IU Visitor Information Center’s mission of serving as the “official front door” to Indiana University.  The GA’s responsibilities will include supervising a staff of undergraduate employees, coordinating Visitor Center programs and activities, engaging with visitors and guests of the university, performing other administrative duties as assigned, and working on resources (website, brochures, etc.) to improve the IU Visitor experience.  The graduate assistant will report to the Director of the IU Visitor Information Center.

Qualifications:

  • Great organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated to find ways to improve our office
  • Warm and welcoming presence

Desired:

  • A general knowledge of IU’s undergraduate programs and services and of Bloomington.
  • Candidates that can help build our brand, visitor resources, and web presence:
  • Skill/experience working in graphic design
  • Knowledge of the Adobe Suite (mostly InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
  • Experience with content management systems and html/css

Interested applicants should email a cover letter, resume, and (optional) online portfolio link to Nicole Griffin at nsg@indiana.edu by 5:00pm on Friday, March 13, 2015.  Late submissions will not be accepted.  Qualified and eligible candidates will be contacted to interview for the position in late March.  A student who already has a student academic appointment may apply as long as they understand they must forfeit their current assignment if selected for this position.

Eldercare Resource Information Session with Area 10 Agency on Aging

March 5th, 12-pm | IMU Dogwood Room

Caring for an aging loved one can be overwhelming, especially when you feel alone.  Join us on March 5, when Kerry Conway from Area 10 Agency on Aging will deliver a presentation about the resources available through their office and the community.  In this one-hour session you will learn about the wide variety of high-quality, affordable services to seniors, persons with disabilities, and individuals concerned about family members or friends.  

Autism: Early Signs and Active Parenting of the Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder

March 25th, 12-1pm | IMU Dogwood Room

Information and controversy about autism has dominated the headlines in recent years. This session leaves mainstream media behind and focuses on practical information taken from science.

Postpartum Depression Information Session

April 8th, 12-1pm | IMU Dogwood Room

This one-hour session is for anyone interested in learning more about the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression, including soon-to-be parents, new parents, and friends and family concerned about loved ones.
